Multicultural Artist are urged to submit promotional kits to the World Buskers Festival held each year in Christchurch New Zealand. A observation of the 2011 festival indicated that besides local Maori entertainers their were few if any artists from ethnically diverse backgrounds from around the world at this event. Return flights are quite reasonable to Christchurch and the travel time is around 3.5 hours ex Brisbane and the South Island is one of the most beautiful places on earth to visit.
The 2011 World Buskers Festival will take place January 20 - 30, 2011(missed out this year then put in for the 2012 event in Christchurch New Zealand)

ARIA Award winning band Zulya and the Children of the Underground, who are embarking on a national tour to launch their new album, Tales of Subliming, will perform at the Judith Wright Centre on Sunday 11 April 2010.
Zulya and the Children of the Underground won an ARIA Award for Best World Music Album for their last recording,3 Nights, which also spent four months in the Top 10 of the European world music charts.
Well-known in Brisbane for her guest performances with Doch Gypsy Orchestra, Women in Voice and her last soldout concert at Judith Wright Centre in 2007, Zulya says her new music was inspired by the fairytales of her childhood.

“Tales of Subliming is a collection of vignettes based on fairytales; each song brings to life the journey of a female character including Gerda from Snow Queen, the Snow Maiden and Baba Yaga (the Russian witch),” Zulya said.

“It was exciting to explore these characters through song as there is a lot more going on in fairytales than we can see at first glance; fairytales are about our journeys to achieve individuality in a symbolic form,” she said.

“Some say each of us identifies with our own fairy story or with a character from one. Because of this I am confident that the audience will find the music evocative, fascinating, thought-provoking and uplifting,” she said.

Zulya and the Children of the Underground combines the melancholy, beauty and drama of Zulya’s song writing and the extraordinary musicianship of her collaborators.
Described by critics as a blend of Russian and Tatar ethnic music and contemporary European jazz, Zulya’s songwriting traverses country, cumbia, klezmer, jazz, classical, Russian folk, Mexican and circus music styles.
For Tales of Subliming the distinctive trumpet of new band member Eamon McNelis (Flap!, Vada) assumes the role of primary solo instrument, shifting the emphasis away from the mostly Russian sound of the band’s two earlier releases.
Contrary to Zulya’s previous albums, which have been primarily written in Russian, Tales of Subliming features seven songs written in English.
Growing up in Tatarstan, Russia, in a musical family, Zulya was immersed in a culture of family gatherings with lots of song around the table and started performing at age nine.

Since moving to Australia in 1991, Zulya has performed at festivals and venues across the country including Sydney Opera House, WOMADELAIDE and Woodford Folk Festival, among others.Zulya was awarded Female Artist of the Year by the 2001 Australian World Music Awards and won Best Live World
Music Artist by the 2002 Australian Live Music Awards.
Embarking on a national tour to launch their new album, Tales of Subliming, Zulya and the Children of the Underground will perform for one-night-only at the Judith Wright Centre on Sunday 11 April 2010.

TOURED AND PRESENTED BY KULTOUR

Lisa Hilli and her mother Cathy Hilli guide and demonstrate a celebratory feast melding Australian and Papua New Guinean cultures, where members of the public participate in the preparation, cooking and eating of I Gir, a traditional vegetable and chicken dish cooked in banana leaves with hot river stones and served with rice. Literally meaning 'to steam with hot stones' I Gir is a traditional Tolais dish from Papua New Guinea . While much of the time consuming food preparation will be done in advance of the demonstration participants are encouraged to try scraping coconuts, softening banana leaves and assisting Cathy in other aspects of the process. Then participants sit down and share I Gir with Lisa and Cathy.

“As a critical focal point of this project, I feel it is important to maintain my cultural inheritances and continue to practice them even if they are not truly in the traditional sense. By applying these cultural histories and traditions through a contemporary context, I believe my ideas and knowledge of my New Guinean culture are being delivered in a way that appeals to an audience within popular culture yet fulfils my needs to maintain my specific New Guinean / Australian individuality”.

Lisa Hilli, Artist: Make sure you don’t miss out on seeing Lisa’s exhibition, Just Like Home, in The Well, Brisbane Powerhouse from Wednesday 31 March – Sunday 11 April. Just Like Home is an exhibition, a meal, a film and a biography, which explores artist Lisa’s Hilli’s New Guinean and Australian heritage.

Wan Solwora featuring George Telek, David Bridie and Band and the Narasirato Pan Pipers from the Solomon Islands will commence at 7.30pm in the Powerhouse Theatre, Brisbane Powerhouse.

Planet is the Brisbane Powerhouse dedicated world music and dance program. This project has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland. This is a Kultour presentation developed in partnership with Multicultural Arts Victoria and BEMAC with the assistance of the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.

This January sees the first time visit to Australian shores for African guitarist/singer/songwriter, Vieux Farka Touré who is set to perform an intimate show at Brisbane Powerhouse.

Mixing reggae, funk and R&B, Vieux Farka Touré breaks new ground as one of the first world music artists to embrace the sounds of rock. The son of African music legend, the late Ali Farka Touré, he draws on West African Malian traditions, and incorporates his father’s signature desert style blues to create his own unique style and sound.

Please note BEMAC's operating hours for 2010 will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 10am - 4pm. BEMAC reopens for business on Tuesday 19th January.

Multicultural Arts and Mobility: A Queensland Perspective

BEMAC are honored to announce that they will be hosting a Multicultural Arts Round Table at Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts next Monday, November 9th 2009.

The theme for the roundtable is “Multicultural Arts and Mobility: A Queensland Perspective”

In attendance will be delegates from around Australia that make up the board of Kultour (the national touring body for Multicultural Arts) alongside representatives from government agencies including Brisbane City Council, Logan City Council, Arts Queensland, Australia Council for the Arts, regional Queensland, venues and presenters.

The roundtable has been designed as to provide a key opportunity to air and discuss the issues and opportunities that Queensland's culturally and linguistically diverse artists face. This is in conbination with the opprtunity for artists to ask questions of and listen to a panel of key industry representatives and artists with a range of touring experiences.

It is anticipated that this mini-conference will open up the dialogue for Multicultural Arts here in Queensland and that

some on-going relationships and opportunities will develop that see Queensland artists with more national and international opportunities.

The event will also feature showcase appearances by some of Qld’s finest multicultural artists inclduing “Dheeraj” Showcase (music), “Paradise” Showcase (theatre), “Anthony Garcia” Showcase (music), “Walisuma” Showcase (music) and “Baala Baajo” Showcase (music), as well as photography and visual art from Salaam Elmerebi and Tewodros Fekadu. Held 6pm till 10pm, Fri Nov 20th in the beautiful world heritage listed waterfront gardens @ Yungaba in Kangaroo Point, World By Night is a free entry, family friendly festival featuring contemporary world music, dance, cuisine and craft.

Held under the stars, World By Night will see the historic waterfront gardens and buildings underneath the Story Bridge come to life for the last time before private development; with music, dance, workshops, foods stalls, arts & crafts and information stalls in an exquisite celebration of the important arts, cultural and cuisine benefits that migrants and refugees have brought to Queensland culture.

Stalls will feature foods from around the world, including Pacific, African, Asian, western European, Eastern European, and the America’s. There will also be a fresh food stall which stock unusual foods from Indian spices to exotic vegetables and fruits. Stalls will have information available on the dishes sold about the ingredients and their origins, how these traditional dishes might have been made 150 years ago and how they might have changed to suit the Australian version.

Art and Craft stalls will also feature across the market’s with high quality diverse craft from numerous world cultures on display- the perfect Christmas shopping alternative!! There will also be free Henna Tattooing all night.

The festival opening also will feature an Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony and a welcome to country from the local indigenous community.

You are cordially invited to the premiere of "Karalbo". Karalbo is the culmination of year two of BEMAC's One 4 All project, funded by the Australia Council for the Arts, art in a multicultural Australia initiative. An original musical theatre piece which has been collaboratively created by young people from Sudanese, Samoan, Papua New Guinean, Indigenous and Australian backgrounds; Karalbo will take you on a journey, trekking across Sudan, singing in the Pacific and chewing bubble-gum in Australia. These young people have come to together to create both a show and friendships that will last a life-time....Karalbo, all together!

‘Karalbo’, an Aboriginal word meaning ‘togetherness’ is a fitting name for this project exploring the journeys of young Queenslanders from diverse backgrounds.

These young people have collaborated with professional artists such as Brisbane musician Roz Pappalardo, and each other, to tell their stories through music and drama. The performance will trace journeys from around the world, meeting in the city of Brisbane and looking to the future.

Be transported through time with 2 of Brisbane ’s finest Eastern European Groups. Renowned for their performance of Bulgarian traditional music and song, Zhiva Voda (‘Water of Life’) offers a unique and vibrant musical experience.

Inspired by the beauty of their home land’s traditions, Reni Pavlova-Bojilov and George Gaydov join with Australian born Ann Bermingham to c rea te soaring solos, spine- tingling harmonies and virtuosic instrumentals, underpinned by exciting rhythms, and universal stories of love, longing and everyday life.

The Russian Folkloric Ensemble Samotsvety was established in February 2000. Since then the ensemble has matured and now performs more than 70 Russian folkloric songs, Cossacks songs, Ukrainian, and Gipsy songs. Samotsvety means semi-precious jewels.

The Anwar Abudragh visit wrap up

Anwar Abudragh, master of Iraqi maqam (traditional songs), oud and joze (small spike-fiddle) conducted music workshops and concerts in August in collaboration with BEMAC, BAMEDAN and the Brisbane Powerhouse. For the first time Anwar Abudragh brought his classical Iraqi music mastery (developed at the Baghdad University and through his work with Iraqi music masters Munir Basheer and Nasser Shamma) to Brisbane. Abudragh also has extensive teaching experience teaching Western musicians the theory, form and improvisation of traditional Iraqi music, having taught in Europe for the last 9 years.
Awar Abudragh's Iraqi Maqam workshop was attended by 15 local musicians including players of oud, clarinet, ney, kemenche, erhu, setar, darabuka and singers. The size and accoustics of BEMAC's hall were perfect, as was the weather on the lawn during lunch break. The workshop participants performed one of the songs they learnt at the community concert on the following day which was also located in the lovely Yungaba hall. Kanagaroo Point locals attended the concert and the audience feedback was very positive.
Anwar Abudragh and local musicians including Nawraz Alfreh (kemanche), Greta Kelly (kemanche tarhu) and dancer Tamara Taylor performed as part of Brisbane's Queen St Mall Live program. A keen Iranian dancer hopped up on stage and danced to one of the debka (Arabic rythym) dance pieces with Tamara who was well received by the large audience who'd gathered.

The Brisbane Powerhouse hosted a fantastic concert on Saturday 15th August. The audience, some of whom recognised the songs of their youth, responded warmly and this enthusiasm and the clicking, clapping and ululation that it generates infected the whole crowd, who gave the performers two standing ovations. This concert was aptly named 'Anwar Abudragh and friends', because all the local musicians have been playing middle-eastern music together for several years now and because the genuine warmth of Anwar's spirit had made us all firm friends. For me it was the culmination of a long held dream; for the past two years I had attended workshops with Anwar at the Labyrinth Music School in Crete, Greece and wished I could share the privilige with my musical colleagues far away in Brisbane. Anwar's visit to Brisbane realised that dream and BEMAC's involvment enabled it. Thanks to all the hard-working crew at BEMAC.

Talking Tapa: Pasifika Bark Cloth in Queensland

Talking Tapa: Pasifika Bark Cloth in Queensland is a BEMAC initiative. It is currently showing at The Museum of Brisbane, City Hall, Brisbane CBD. Catch it while it is here until 11 October, before it leaves for Cairns.

Australia’s Pacific heritage continues to grow. Brisbane and Queensland’s eastern seaboard is increasingly becoming home for thousands upon thousands of Pacific islanders. So it is timely that this exhibition Talking Tapa: Pasifika Bark Cloth in Queensland has been developed to reflect this.

Tapa is the common name for beaten bark cloth from The Pacific. While most tapa is made from the inner bark (bast) of the paper mulberry tree, fig and breadfruit are also represented in this exhibition.

Works from the Melanesian nations and islands of Papua New Guinea, West Papua a province of Indonesia, The Solomon Islands and New Caledonia, and the Polynesian Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, and Wallis and Futuna are represented. Community loans hang beside museum pieces. Some have be used very recently in Queensland to decorate homes, wedding receptions, meeting halls, birthday parties, for use at funerals and perhaps most commonly for Fijians to wear at their weddings.

Fijian wedding outfits vie with Papuan New Guinean ceremonial skirts and cloaks, very large Tongan pieces, loincloths and headdresses from the Solomon Islands, bark cloth lengths from Erromongo Island, Vanuatu and unusual tapa clothing from Wallis and Futuna. Community stories about tapa have translations in Tongan, Fijian and Samoan and sit beside detailed information about the history, uses and production of tapa from our Pacific neighbours.

The oldest bark cloth in the show is from Futuna Island and dates from the 1860s, whilst the latest was acquired in the Solomons in September 2008. Tapa decoration draws on clan and family patterning, the spirit world, the plant, bird, animal and fish kingdoms, abstract and geometric designs, as well as historical and contemporary events and representations.

Talking Tapa is a national traveling exhibition sponsored and presented by BEMAC, curated by Joan Winter and out managed by Museum and Gallery Services Queensland. It has been financially assisted by Visions of Australia, an Australian Government Program supporting touring exhibitions by providing funding assistance for the development and touring of Australian cultural material. This project is also proudly funded by Queensland Government’s Gambling Community Benefit Fund and Brisbane City Council.

Good day to you all! Well the weather has certainly taken a turn for the good, if you like the heat that is…beautiful Queensland , why would you live anywhere else! We are already half-way through the month of August and it has been very eventful. Highlights include the Anwar workshops and concert at Brisbane Powerhouse last weekend, very special, and I thoroughly enjoyed our August Planet which featured Burundi Drummers and Baala Baajo, what a contrast, from the high energy of the Drummers to a beautiful set featuring the Kora, Djembe and traditional instruments…mesmerizing!

For the artist’s out there, please read on below re submissions to be considered for national touring via Kultour , Australia ’s multicultural arts touring company. This is a fantastic opportunity and I would love to see Queensland well represented in this process, feel free to give me a call if you wish to discuss your application.

September has much going on, I have to mention Brisbane ’s 150th Birthday bash first, Sunday 6th, this promises to be an awesome day with entertainment and displays throughout the Botanic Gardens over the Good Will Bridge and along the south bank of the river! KULTOUR 2011 TOURING PROGRAM – APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN

Kultour presents an annual touring program of high-quality contemporary multicultural arts from around Australia . This program provides artists with professional development in the touring of CALD (culturally and linguistically diverse) works, and opportunities for their works reach new audiences regionally, interstate and internationally.* In turn, Kultour programs grant diverse audiences insight into multicultural and inter-cultural arts.

Kultour invites applications from emerging and established artists across all art forms whose work reflects Australia ’s cultural diversity. Proposed works must be tour ready and have had their premiere in the last 3 years. Applicants are required to submit a completed application following the program guidelines, including support material and a ‘sign off’ letter from your local Kultour Company member.

Successful applicants will be invited to participate in Kultour’s 2011 Touring Program. Kultour will manage and arrange funding for all aspects of the tour with the support of the Australia Council, Kultour Company Members and various Kultour partners.

4EB call for entries for a live music compilation

Brisbane's multicultural community radio station Radio 4EB98.1 FM is seeking artists to feature on a CD compilation! The CD will be of live recordings from a number of local artists and will be distributed and promoted to community radio stations all around the country. Seven Lucky artists will be selected to record two of their songs live on air or in 4EB's professional recording studios. We are looking for a cross section of artists who play folk, traditional, Latin or fusion so if you fit the bill please contact the station with an expression of interest.

Volunteer Tutors needed

Karen McLaren is a primary teacher at Redbank Plains State School and is teaching a composite class of Grades 5, 6 and 7. She has also discovered that the class is quite multicultural in its background with representative students from the following nationalities:

New Zealand; Netherlands; Vietnam; Brazil; Malaysia; Scotland; Germany; Sri Lanka, Samoa; Ireland; Chile and England. Karen has started teaching a multicultural component to the students and they are currently researching each of these nations but they want to learn more than this. They are interested in learning simple art and craft activities, national games, songs, dance and drama from any or all of these countries, so Karen, on behalf of the children, has a request.

Anwar Abudragh, a soulful singer of classical Iraqi maqam and inspirational player of the oud (fretless lute) and joze (Iraqi spike-fiddle), performs at Brisbane Powerhouse, Saturday, 15th August.

Abudragh seeks to reinvent Iraqi maqam, by enriching the classical tradition with his musical experience in working with artists and musicians from different horizons. Accompanying him are Iraqi and local musicians on Arabic, Turkish and Persian instruments and the sensational dancing of Tamara Taylor. This varied concert will begin by introducing listeners to the rarefied and delicate sounds of classical Iraqi songs and improvisations, and ends with a large ensemble with Tamara leading an Arabic dance party. Your ears and eyes will be transfixed from start to finish with a plethora of unique instruments, rhythms and accents.

The Mehr Ensemble has been working tirelessly for the past year concentrating on putting together 2 different repertoires in traditional Persian musical modal systems which has never been heard before. This group of extraordinarily talented musicians is now ready to share the new work with local and national audiences.

The Mehr ensemble was first formed in Tehran , Iran in 1999 in by Pooya Mehmanpazir and has continued its active operation to date. The members of this ensemble are currently skilled instrumentalists in their own fields and the ensemble members may increase and vary depending on projects and tours. The focus of this ensemble is to create new revelations in the light and framework of Persian ancient Radif musical systems with embedded energy which is intended to lift the soul and the hearts of the lovers of cultural music. The group aims to create music which is highly filtered and fine tuned to high standards, irrespective of ensemble size. To create complex musical pieces in pure form and create a new dimension to sounds that effect both human soul and spirit.

Diafrix have established themselves over the last five years as one of Australia ’s most exciting and original live acts. There’s no recycled funk here - it’s 100% original soul, dancehall and reggae-infused hip hop. Fronted by African-born MCs Azmarino and Momo and backed up by Haitian goddess Nadee. With lavish organic productions from Ptero_Stylus and cuts from Wax Vandal Diafrix know how to get the party started.

Born in Footscray, Melbourne at the cafe that bears their name Diafrix represent the motherland of Africa and refugees from all corners of the globe. The workshop on Saturday 8th August will be tailored to adult singers and instrumentalists. Participants are not required to be able to read sheet music (although music will be provided). Students will be introduced to classical Iraqi Maqam, a traditional song, and we will also touch upon the takasim (improvisation). A Community Concert presented by BEMAC, BAMEDAM and The Romero Centre will include Anwar Abudragh and those students who wish to participate.

Kultour are now taking applications for touring funding for 2011. Each year Kultour presents a program of touring performances from culturally and linguistically diverse communities. Emerging and established artist from across all art forms are invited to apply. Support from Kultour provides opportunities for professional development for artists through broader experience of performance and touring. Applications close September 24, 2009.
BEMAC like many other similar organisations around Australia is a member of Kultour and would like to invite artists from Queensland to take advantage of the opportunity to apply for support and take on the challenge of expanding their audience and sharing the richness of their artistic expression. It is important to note that proposed works must be tour ready and have had their premiere in the last 3 years.

Special Events this week

Hi everyone, it is a week or so before the next BEMAC e-news comes out, but I wanted to share with you a couple of exciting events we have coming up in the next couple of weeks. Firstly, Anwar Abudragh will be touring Australia during the month of August and BEMAC are proud to present a series of workshops and concerts at BEMAC and Brisbane Powerhouse. Anwar Abudragh, born in Baghdad, lives in Belgium and performs and teaches throughout Europe and The States. He obtained a diploma from the institute of Music in 1991 and completed his Masters degree from the Faculty of Plastic Arts at the University of Baghdad in1995. He is currently completing a Masters of Musicology in Belgium.

The last great master, Munir Basheer played a major role in Abudragh's musical development. Under his direction and the supervision of the artist Nasser Shamma, Abudragh has participated as joze player in the group Al Baiyariq. He has also worked as a violinist in the Iraqi Symphonic Group. Abudragh taught at the Institute of Music as well as the School of Music and Ballet in Baghdad. He participated in several Arab and international festivals including in Belgium, Holland, Germany, France, Bourtougal, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq. He currently works as teacher of music at the Arab Cultural Centre in Brussels. He also performs solo playing joze, ud and singing Maqam.

This is a wonderful opportunity to participate and experience a great international talent.

There are two of us who work Tuesday - Friday at the BEMAC office, myself and the most wonderful Sharmin Ferdous, who is our Administration/Finance guru, and without whom we would all be in a state of constant chaos (rather than just the periodic chaos we currently exist in!) In addition to Sharmin, we have the lovely Ema Filimoto three days a week, coordinating our project and event management. I have asked each of them to write a brief paragraph about themselves below.
June was a very busy month, including a trip to Melbourne for Kultour business. Kultour is the national touring company for multicultural arts in Australia. As BEMAC Director, I have the honour of representing and advocating for Queensland multicultural arts on the board of Kultour. It was exciting to learn more about this company and the opportunities is presents for Queensland artists to access supported national and international touring opportunities. I had the pleasure of meeting the Directors/CEO's from the other company member organisations from across Australia that were able to be there, including Multicultural Arts Victoria, Footscray Community Arts Centre and Nexus. I had the pleasure of visiting both MAV and Footscray. I must say though, I prefer the weather here!
My biggest highlight of the month though was, most definitely, the unveiling if the One 4 All art+place installation at South Bank Parklands on World Refugee Day. It was amazing to see the outcome of this year long visual arts project which was the brainchild of my predecessor, Bronte Morris. Artists Karen Shapcott, Catriona Holland, Candy Soller and Pete Mac Farline worked with young people from a range of Brisbane communities, exploring identity through visual art. Through this process 3 incredibly talented young people who have a passion to pursue visual art were identified; Amhad Shah Nazari ( Afghanistan), Samsun Joseph ( Sudan) and Amal Suleman ( Sudan). These three young people then continued to develop skills and created the pieces. The finished art represents ‘Memory Boxes’ that convey the stories, memories, hopes and dreams of these three young refugees, who have undertaken remarkable journeys to become valued members of our community. This installation is the first example of art representing multiculturalism in the South Bank Parklands, and the work not only provides a voice to the experiences of our refugee community members, but will also encourage deeper understanding and appreciation in the wider community. The installation acknowledges the contribution of refugee and migrant communities in Queensland and the vibrant diversity they bring to the social, cultural and artistic fabric of Queensland .
July is another big month, with the launch of our Planet Series at Brisbane Powerhouse on the 4th July at 5pm on the Turbine Platform. This is a free monthly show for those of us who wish we could travel the world, but don't have the time (or budget!). This month we are lucky to have Mars Melto in town from Vanuatu and A French Butler called Smith. If you are keen to continue the party after that, head across the bridge to BEMAC for the first in a series of "stringed instruments of the world" gigs, Acoustic Sessions, featuring Anthony Garcia, Mars Melto and also local emerging artists, Nes and Sammy J. Another highlight for July will be the Columbian Day Celebrations, a day of Columbian food, music and dancing on the 18th July at BEMAC. In other news, get ready for the BEMAC technological revolution - we are joining the 21st century and will be launching, over the next couple of weeks, our BlogSpot, Facebook and MySpace pages in the lead-up to the unveiling of the new BEMAC web-site. We may even go down the twitter road too, but that's enough technology for me in one sitting! Joining BEMAC was the first breakthrough of my professional career in Australia. I have recently shifted to Australia from Auckland, New Zealand, and have been thrown in the deep end with BEMAC Woohoo!!! I have a background in Events Management , Television Production, Mentoring and Travel, which I hope will add to diverse role I am in. So far it has been awesome, crazy busy, but definitely worth getting lost at every bus way on the way to work. I look forward to getting to know every facet of Brisbane City, and all of you through BEMAC, whether it is through this Blog, or you receiving a call from myself for a particular event. WORKSHOPS

One 4 All 09

If you are a young person aged 12-17 and are interested in music or drama, then One 4 All is the program for you. Participants can elect to develop their skills in any of the FOLLOWING areas, including: African Drumming, Drama, Songwriting, Singing, Guitar, Spoken Word/MCing, Indigenous instruments, etc. There will be weekly workshops (at a location near you!) and then once a month all the participants from across SEQ will come together at BEMAC to exchange creative ideas and create new works. The program will culminate in a show at Brisbane Powerhouse on the 16th October

JOIN BEMAC and come be apart of 150 years of Brisbane ’s Independence with the ‘B150 CELEBRATIONS’. This is ‘ Brisbane City Council’s’ largest event for 2009, and BEMAC will be providing a journey throughout the History of Brisbane ’s CULTURAL migration through MUSIC, DANCE, and PERFORMANCE. This will start from the Aboriginal settlement and migration from Indonesia, New Guinea and Melanesia, to the Colonial Settlement with British migrants, the arrival of continental Europeans, Chinese, and Germans, to Post War Jews, Irish, Greek, Italian, Yugoslavian, and Dutch, New Zealanders, refugees from Spain and Portugal, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Russia, post 1960’s – South American Countries, Asian Countries, to the 21^st Century migrants from the Middle East and Africa.

Hi everyone, welcome to the new Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre - BEMAC Many Cultures One Heart blog. For those of you whom I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting and those who are new to BEMAC, HELLO! I have been operating in the Director's chair since the 1st of March, and must say I love it, what an incredible place to work! I come to BEMAC with a background in community development with both Indigenous and Pacific Island communities and more recently 4 years in the contemporary music industry, in artist and event management. I hope the skills I bring to the table will add to the rich 22 year history this organisation has. Well enough on me, this month I would like to draw your attention to a number of key things we have going on, and invite you to become a part of the BEMAC family by becoming a member.

B150 celebrations 6th September - This is the day all of Brisbane will head to the city's extensive CBD parklands to celebrate our birthday! BEMAC are hosting one of the main stages in the Botanic Gardens and are looking for expressions of interest from artists to help us celebrate the amazing contributions of our migrant communities to this city's cultural diversity. We are programming the stage to reflect the patterns of migration into Brisbane . The Lord Mayor will open the celebrations on our stage early in the day and we will party on until it finishes. (pls note this is not a paid performance, but a coming together of the community to celebrate!)

Planet - I am very excited to announce this awesome program. BEMAC has developed a partnership with Brisbane Powerhouse to bring WORLD MUSIC to the city on the first Saturday of every month free on the Turbine Platform. In addition, there will be a number of ticketed shows throughout the next 12 months with key artists from around the globe. BEMAC members get discounted ticket prices!

World By Night - As part of this years Q150/B150 year long party, BEMAC are putting on a special celebration of world music, dance and food under the stars! To be held on Saturday 20th of November. We are looking for performers and stall holders, both fresh produce, prepared food, and arts and crafts. The evening will take the form of night markets and entertainment.

Refugees cast in stone at South Bank Parklands

As refugee communities across Queensland celebrate World Refugee week, the Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre (BEMAC) and South Bank Parklands joined forces to erect a tangible acknowledgement of the contributions of those communities to our beautiful city. On World Refugee Day on the 20th of June, four permanent sandstone sculptures were unveiled at a small celebration in the Cultural Forecourt of the South Bank Parklands.

This installation is the culmination of a year long project with artists, Karen Shapcott, Catriona Holland, Candy Soller and Pete Mac Farline working with young people from a range of Brisbane communities, exploring identity through visual art. This community engagement process identified 3 incredibly talented young people who have a passion to pursue visual art in a more focused way; Amhad Shah Nazari ( Afghanistan ), Samsun Joseph ( Sudan ) and Amal Suleman ( Sudan ). Further workshops were spent with these 3 young people, identifying what THEY felt were important aspects of their stories.

The artwork represents ‘Memory Boxes and suitcases’ that convey the stories, memories, hopes and dreams of three refugee students that have undertaken remarkable journeys to become valued members of our community. The four pillars follow the stories of each young person, from their childhoods in far off homelands to their dreams for the future in Brisbane , from their childhoods in their country of origin to exile, transit and finally life in Australia and their bright futures.

This installation isthe first example of art representing multiculturalism in the South Bank Parklands, and the work not only provides a voice to the experiences of our refugee community members, but will hopefully also encourage understanding in the greater community. The installation acknowledges the contribution of refugee and migrant communities in Queensland and the vibrant diversity they bring to the social, cultural and artistic fabric of Queensland .

Funded through Arts Queensland's art+place program, the works were one of the outcomes of BEMAC's One 4 All project, an Australia Council for the Arts funded, Art in a Multicultural Australia initiative. This 3 year project works with young people from diverse cultural backgrounds, such as Indigenous, Pacific Island , Iranian, Afghani, Sudanese and Somalian; using various art forms as a means of exploring identity and culture in the context of their past, present and futures as new Australians.

This visual art component of the project sits alongside a music development program and concert with facilitator and Brisbane musician, Roz Papalardo of Women in Docs; to be held at the Brisbane Powerhouse on the 16th October this year.
